COLOR LANGUAGE
2013
Color Language is a series that explores how different cultures experience and define color. The series dissects the words assigned to each primary and secondary color in nine different languages. The work was created by asking nine different people who speak different languages in Belleville, Paris to say the colors in their maternal language. Although these are representative of the whole of a language, each person has a different voice and accent making each work become intimate windows into the individual's perception. The paintings were done using the sound waves of the voices recorded. Each sound wave is represented in black as to not disturb the viewer’s site onto the shape and composition of the word. The black shapes leave us to compare and look closely into how the definition of color translates from language to language. Each painting represents one and a half seconds defining time into the element of space. This series embarks on trying to draw conclusions on how we all see, understand, and define the colors around us by translating the color's auditory representation within time into a shape within space.
